It is called the cricoid (GreekJcriJios, a ring) car^iZa^e. Abovethis is a V-shaped cartilage with broad sides, the thyroid (G-reek tJiu-reos, ^ a shield ). The open part ofthis cartilage is filled in by the broad posterior part ofthe cricoid. At the back of the larynx, on each side ofthe broad part of the cricoid, is a small cartilage, the aryte- 261.
