Below Winshields is the Sycamore Gap tree standing in a dramatic dip in Hadrian’s Wall, a defensive fortification in the Roman province of Britannia, begun in AD 122 in the reign of the emperor Hadrian. It was voted English Tree of the Year in the Woodland Trust’s awards and also appeared in the 1991 film ‘Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves’, starring Kevin Costner. Northumberland National Park, England.
