Method for making nylon. This method is used to demonstrate polymerisation. First, an aqueous solution of hexane-1,6-diamine is added to a dish. Then a solution of decanedioyl dichloride in cyclohexane is carefully added to minimise mixing. The cyclohexane layer floats above the water layer. The polymer forms at the interface. A pair of tweezers is used to gently pull the nylon upward - as it is removed fresh nylon continues to be made at the interface. The nylon may be wound around a rod and a thread of nylon pulled from the dish for as long as both reagents are available.
