Level 2 bathroom. Dreamcatcher, Melbourne, Australia. Architect: Fiona Winzar Architects, 2014.

Starting with the ugliest house in the street on just 130sqm of land, this project recycles an 80's clinker brick town house and transforms it into a 21st century inner Melbourne home with a focus on adaptable and sustainable design. A new structure is morphed onto the body of the old dwelling to provide a second floor living level, first floor sleeping level and a ground floor self-contained studio. The north facing courtyard/carspace and first floor deck are screened with X-tend mesh like giant scale lattice, paying homage to the decorative veranda screen of the original Victorian worker's cottage that was demolished in the 1980s, before heritage controls were introduced. The X-tend mesh is introduced as a sculptural form and independent tensile structure engineered to support deciduous vines (ready to take off) that will screen the house from the ravages of the summer sun.
