And, hav-ing made two obeisances to the House,when he came into the middle of theHouse, with his mace in his hand, hedeclared to Mr. Speaker, that he wascommanded by his Highness the LordProtector, to let tliis House know thathis Highness is in the Painted Chamber,and desires to speak with this honour-able House. And thereupon with-drew. Which being done, Mr. Speaker,attended with the whole House, theClerk with the Bills in his hand, andthe Serjeant witli his mace . . wentup to the Painted Chamber; where his. l!lini!iwiiiiii!iiiiiif The Protectorate 105 Highness, attended with the Lord Presi-dent and the rest of the Council [etc.,etc.] were expecting. . The Speaker addressed himself to hisHighness, and gave an account of theemployment of the House during theirsitting; and that many Bills for thepublic good were upon the anvil. . After which the Clerk read the titleof the first Bill. . Which Bill hisHighness caused to be read ; and uponreading thereof, declared to the Clerkhis consent to the same, in these words,We do consent. And, thereupon,the Clerk made an entry thereof on theBill, in these words, The Lord Pro-tector doth consent. . The titles of the rest of the publicBills, first, and then the private Bills,were read. And to each of them hisHighnesss consent thereunto declared,entered, and published as before. . His Highness having made ashort speech, the Speaker, with the i^estof the members, departed in the likeorder as they came thither, to the Parlia-ment
