This photograph shows the Dwina River Front in Archangel, Russia. It was taken on July 1, 1919, by the photographer Sot. Shotwell, The image captures several large freighters and gunboats anchored in the channel, with smaller fishing smacks moored along the riverbank. The bar near the point where the Dwina meets the White Sea is 350 feet wide and 26 feet deep at high water, while the channel in the anchorage depicted in the picture is 30 feet deep. The port is closed by ice for approximately five to six months each year, depending on weather conditions.
