Kelleys Island and the Bass islandsin Lake Erie, north of Sandusky, belong to Ohio. The greatdivide which forms the wator-shed passes diagonally across theState from Trumbull county in the northeast to Mercer andDarke counties in the west, and has a general elevation of about1,200 feet above the sea level, rising to 1,500 feet in Logancounty. The surface slopes gradually from the divide northand west to Lake Erie, which is 5(i5 feet above the sea, and southwest to the Ohioriver, which at Cincinnati is about 430 feet above sea level. The Ohio is the princi-pal river, and has a course of 4o0 miles on the southern and eastern border.
