The trail up to the east portal of the Grand Alpine Tunnel on the old Denver, South Park and Pacific Railroad.
The Denver South Park and Pacific railroad trail leads to the now sealed of eastern portal of the Grand Alpine Tunnel. The trail follows the old railway grade. The old log sleepers are visible in this image and at a number of places along the route. The tunnel, 1805 feet long, was opened in 1882 and closed in 1910. Its construction was plagued with problems. The harsh winters made work very difficult. The tunnel advanced only a 2 -3 feet per day. The workers were paid the then high wage of $3 per day to reflect the hard and dangerous nature of the job. From 1889 the tunnel was closed for 4 years due to a rockfall.
