Lilies for English gardensA guide for amateursCompiled from information published lately in "The Garden", with the addition of some original chapters . rdalinmn and kingtonianum, is well spoken of, and there isreason to believe that Mr. Burbank before long willgive the world some good new hybrids. The hybridsof Martagon, such as Marhan (Martagon-\- Hansoni),are without doubt interesting, and have a certaindegree of beauty, but the genus Lilium seems tooffer a field for the working of better things. It isto be hoped that this industrious and able hybridistor some other enthusiast will work among the whiteLilies. The orange yellows, in the crocemn andMartagon groups, are already so numerous, and tothe unlearned amateur so confusing, that the bestthat can be done with them is to derive if possiblebold flowers of self colouring rather than a mereseries of connecting links between species ofsecondary importance. It should be rememberedthat what is wanted in a garden is beautiful flowersrather than many different kinds of flowers. Manya possibly lovely garden is ruined by too great amixture, and could only be redeemed by the practice. A HYBRID LILY : PARRYI + PARDALINUM. DEEP ORANGE (Flowers,Three inches across. Raised by an Anuiteur.)
