At the mast-head is somethingresembling a large block, in which ropes are fixed, whichMazois says are the halyards. In his engraving they lookmore like shrouds; and indeed a boy is making use of themas shrouds, and climbing up them. The crew consists ofchildren who are furling the sail. A man sitting at thepoop holds the rudder, and is said to represent explanations of this sculpture are given—one literal. 520 POMPEII. TOMBS. 521 that it is merely indicative of the profession of Munatius;the other allegorical, that it symbolises the arrival of thetossed ship of life in a quiet haven. The reader may choosebetween the two, as the gods have made him poetical or pro-saic* On the opposite side of the cippus is the bisellium, orseat of honour, granted to Munatius.
