Thus, although they have coal beds, much of their ironore, instead of being smelted at home, is shipped to the coalfields of Swansea in Wales to be smelted. Principal Cities of Spain. — Madrid, the metropolisand capital of Spain, is nearly as large as Baltimore ;but unlike most other large cities so far studied, it is notan important manufacturing centre. Why not ? Theexplanation of its size is found in its central location, andthe fact that it is the seat of government. In crossing thepeninsula to connect the coastal cities, all the principalrailway lines converge at this point, and thus Madrid hasbecome the intellectual and political centre of the country. 246 EUROPE
