The maximum traction trucks used are of special pattern. Theyare designed to carry the greater part of the weight on the drivingwheels, without the liability of derailing the idler wheels. Themetal bolster centre plates are pivoted directly above or near thecenter of the driving and the body bolster center plate isrecessed at its front end to receive the main car body bolster, towhich it is secured by bolts through the base and ends. The truckframes have housings for graduated helical springs, which rest ontop of the journal boxes, and which cushion the entire load. Theside frames are strongly braced diagonally between the wheels, themotor being carried outside of the driving axle. The end crossbars, upon which the motor is supported are drawn in at angles,. W. Each truck has two half-elliptic springs. 38 in. long, upon whichthe car rides. These springs are suspended below the side framesby links, and the weight of the car body and load is transmittedto them by steel posts depending from and fastened to the bolster is equi-distant between the wheels and the weight ofthe car body and passenger load is equally divided between thedriving and idler wheels. Taking lb. as the weight of carbody and neglecting all other weights, this would bring each pair of wheels. But these trucks weigh lb. eachwithout motor, or with motor and with the Lord Baltimoretype of suspension, this additional weight is so distributed as tobring when the car is empty, lb. on each pair of drivingwheels, and 4,200 l
