Cocaine (c. 1925). Theatre Poster for La Splendide by Louis Gouriadec. Artwork by Rene Gaillard.

French painter and illustrator René Gaillard lived and worked for most of his life in Montmartre, depicting the colorful scenes and characters of the area. This original theatre advertising poster is Gaillard's marvelous interpretation of the five act play La Splendide by Louis Gouriadec. Titled Cocaine, (a drug that was legal in Paris throughout the 1920s) the stone litho poster features Paris' most iconic elements: a hawking green gargoyle, the saintly Sacre Coeur, and the siren-red windmill of the wickedly decadent Moulin Rouge.
