Bullfights in Bosnia Bullfighting without shedding blood Every summer, thousands of Bosnians are going on the legendary bullfights Korida. It is a long tradition in Bosnia, and also in parts of Croatia and Serbia. They begin in the spring and stop at the end of autumn. The weekly show is always accompanied by a large barbecue, folk music and long tables with beer and brandy. Unlike bullfighting we know from Spain in Bosnia is not man against bull, here are the bulls who compete against each other. Years ago, the bulls were so stirred up and beaten that they fell upon each other until they bleed to it. But now it`s not like that. The bulls fight in a rickety fences with fenced arena. The spectators stand around behind the fences. A vendor runs laps around the arena with coffee, juice and peanuts. Once one of the bulls gives up, the winner is announced. So it is in nature, as bull breeders and fans says so. Yet Korida attracts visitors and participants from all three ethnic groups, the people who were enemies during the war. After the Bosnian war (1992-1995), it took eight years for bullfighting weather began. Taurus Baasjes of the three ethnic groups –Bosniaks (Bosnian Muslims), Bosnian Serbs and Bosnian Croats- decided to form a multi-ethnic national association for bullfights. The association wanted to revive the tradition, but also aimed to end the ethnic division which the country so torn during the war. In the summer of 2003 the first competitions were held again. The association came in 2008 with new rules for the sharpness of the horns to prevent the bulls injured. Bosnia and Herzegovina wants to join the European Union. Bullfighting is not prohibited within the Union, but Brussels is much criticism of bullfighting as they are held in Spain. Tightening the rules for Bosnia-Herzegovina part of a package of reforms in progress towards the EU.
