Armstrong and Lovell. US astronauts Neil Alden Armstrong (left, 1930-2012), first person to walk on the Moon, and James 'Jim' Arthur Lovell (right, born 1928). Armstrong commanded the Apollo 11 mission, walking on the lunar surface with Buzz Aldrin on 21 July 1969. He retired from NASA in 1971, teaching as a professor of aerospace engineering until 1979. Lovell was the commander of the Apollo 13 mission of April 1970 that suffered a near-fatal mishap before returning safely. Lovell retired from NASA in 1973, later working in business administration.
