Speed-boat water taxis wait for trade at the steps on the Brunei River at Bandar Seri Begawan, capital of Brunei. The steps have been worn away in places by constant rubbing of the boats' bows. They service the water village Kampong Ayer just across the river. The village is an amalgamation of many villages and houses around 39,000 people. Although the buildings are built on stilts over the water, the villages have all amenities with restaurants and shops, mosques and a hospital.
