Born in St. Louis, Mo., 1857; educated at HolbrooksMilitary School, Sing Sing ; graduated Yale, 1879 ; in therailroad business, 1879-86; Manager Hazleton (Pa.)Manufacturing Co., 1886-89; associated with G & Co., in anthracite coal business since i88g. WILLIAM HENRY SMITH, Jr., Coal Oper-ator and Merchant, was born in St. Louis,Missouri, October 2, 1857, the son of WilliamHenry and Mary Hannah (Herndon) Smitli. Onthe fathers side he is descended from one of theearly settlers of SmithfieUl, Long Island, and on the. W . H. biMUH, JK. mothers side from the Herndon family of Kentuckyand Virginia. He was educated at Holbrooks Mili-tary School at Sing Sing, New York, and thenentered Yale, taking the Academic course andgraduating with the degree of Bachelor of Arts in1879. He went into the railroad business in Julyof that year and served in various capacities withthe Champaign, Havana & Western, the Wabash,St. Louis & Pacific, and the Chesapeake & OhioRailways, until 1886, when he took the manage-ment of the Hazleton Manufacturing Company atHazleton, Pennsylvania. He remained in thisposition for three years, and on July i, 1889, be-came associated with G. B. Markle & Company of Jeddo, Pennsylvania, in the business of miningand shipping anthracite coal.
