The piston heads are steel cast-ings of dished section, while the pistonroil^. main and <ide rods, and main crank moved to opposite ends of the quadrant, regardless of the speed with which thelever is moved. The reversing valve consists of a castiron housing cast with integral arms tosupport the quadrant, and forms the ful-crum or pivot point for the eye or lowerend of the reverse lever. Within thehousing or casing, is a single rotary valveof brass, requiring but a small force torotate it on the seat for the admissionand exhaust of the compressed air orsteam to and from opposite sides of thepower cylinder piston. The leverage obtained through the re-verse lever and counections is much morethan is required for the easy operationof the valve, but it is so designed to putthe U-ver handle at the most convenientpoint within reach of the operator. Themaximum stroke of the power cylnderpiston is 18 ins., which may be adjusted. t.\Gl.\E FOR THE S.\.\TA FE. brick tubes are used in both the boilers, and the coal burning locomotive isequipped with an arch, and also with apower-operated grate shaker and fire-door. A Duplex mechanical stoker is ap-plied. The standard arrangement ofSanta Fe oil-burning equipment, withBooth burner, is used on engine superheaters are of the same size asthose used in the 3160 class of Mikadoor 2-8-2 type locomotive in service on iie Santa Fe. Flexible stay-bolts are applied in thebreaking zones in the sides, back andthroat of the firebox, and in the sides andbottom of the combustion chamber; whilefour rows of expansion stays support theforward end of the combustion chambercrown. In tbe case of such of the ex-pansion-stays as cannot be placed radiallyto the outside shell, bosses are electricallywelded to the roof sheet in order to pro-vide a sufficient number of threads forth
