The later Heilmann locomotives, together with theirtenders, attained the prodigious weight of 160 tons. Theinventor intended to let them out in the same way as theSleeping Car Company leases its stoi k, offering ,1 service a1 alower cost and guaranteeing higher speeds. Unfortunately, these mammoth machines proved a failure all round, beingfound too expensive, heavy, and complicated. Speeds ofupwards of ioo miles per hour had been looked for, but al out65 miles per hour seems to have been the limit they trip on them was, however, a curious experience. The roai( I the fast-running machinery in the engine-room, and l the HOLYHEAD VERSUS General View from Leading End of the Heilmann ElectricLocomotive. exhaust steam escaping from the chimney, was , the locomotives ran with phenomena] smooth-ness, and gave the impression of being propelled by irre-sistible force. You could hold a glass full of water standingon the driving platform without spilling a drop or even pro-ducing a ripple on the surface. 11 remains to be seen whether the introduction of the turbineprinciple will prove more successful. In theory, of course, there is much to be said in favour of the self-contained el< < trielocomotive. It obviates one of the chief disadvantages ofthe ordinary steam locomotive, which is that the speed ofthe wheels is directly dependent on the speed of the pistons, and that, therefore, when it is necessary to climb an inclineless power is obtainable from the engine owing to the di-minished piston velocity than would be forthcoming if thisvelocity could lie increased without causing an increase
