Caesarean birth. Surgeon delivering a baby boy, feet first, during a Caesarean section. This procedure involves making an incision, through which the baby is delivered, in the woman's abdomen and uterus. It is performed when it is difficult or dangerous for the baby to be delivered vaginally. The baby is covered in an oily substance (vernix caseosa), which covers the skin easing the passage through the birth canal during vaginal childbirth.
