Commonly referred as, “Buddy,” by JGSDF troops, the Type 89 is gas operated weapon that can fire up to 750 rounds per minute. It was designed with simplified operation and minimal number of parts due to the understanding that the complex structure and large number of parts often hindered the operation of its direct predecessor, the Type 64 Assault Rifle.
