Grey sky view modern concrete footbridge at New Chancellery towards 19th century red sandstone Moltebrucke, River Spree, Berlin
Moltebrucke, inaugurated by his funeral cortege on completion in 1891, is named after Field Marshall von Moltke the Elder (1800-91), a Chief of Staff of the Prussian Army for 30 years. Construction of the 255 ft ( m) long bridge began in 1888, three arches of red Main Sandstone spanning the Spree. The bridge was badly damaged in the Battle of Berlin by German demolition teams trying to prevent units of the Red Army reaching the Reichstag, some 600 m to the south. In the foreground we see a modern concrete footbridge spanning the Spree from the New German Chancellery Building.
