This was presented byMr. Alfred Jordan, the owner of the field, to theMaidstone Museum, where it may now be seen. Inlength, it measures six feet and five inches; while inbreadth, it is two feet and ten inches. One sheet oflead formed the bottom and two sides, but for thetwo ends separate pieces were welded on. The edgesof the lid were so turned down, as to overlap thecoffin on all sides. The ornamentation upon the leadenheadpiece is shewn in the engraving () Similar. Fig. of medallions and mouldings covered 166 EOMAN COFFINS OF LEAD the lid, the sides, and the ends. The raised mouldingsarc, uniformly, composed of alternate narrow ringsand long beads. Each long head is thicker in themiddle than at its extremities, both of wliich arcinvariably capped by one of the narrow rings. Bymeans of this moulding,* the lid is divided intoseveral rectangular compartments, within each ofwhich it is again used in the shape of an X. Everyone of the triangular spaces, thus formed within therectangular divisions of the lid, contains a medallionof Medusas head, as shewn in Eig. 1, and enlarged,in Eig. 1 a.
