A photograph of the hands of a patient with dermatomyositis, connective-tissue disease that is characterised by inflammation of the muscles and the skin. Signs of the disease include a periorbital heliotrope rash (purple / erythematous rash affecting eyelids, malar, forehead and nasolabial folds), and Gottron's papules at the knuckles (purple / erythematous, raised lesions over knuckles and extensor regions) seen here.
