Troja : results of the latest researches and discoveries on the site of Homer's Troy, and in the heroic Tumuli and other sites made in the year 1882, and a narrative of a journey in the Troad in 1881 . No. 44.—Arrow-head of Ivorj-. Size 3:4 ; depth about 8*50ni. having two long barbs and a stem, 0,085 mm. long, which must have been fastened in the shaft. There wasfurther found in the temple A a curiousobject of bone, represented under No. 45 ;it has a hole in the upper end, which canleave no doubt that it has served as thehandle of a knife or some other instru-ment : this seems also to be proved bythe two parallel furrows all round theupper end, which have probably beenmade with flint saws, and must have servedto strengthen the upper end with the handle may be seen hundreds ofcuts, apparently made with knives. Asimilar knife-handle of bone is representedin Ilios, under No. 542, p. 427. To the list of placeswhere such knife-handles can be seen, I may add that thereis one in the Egyptian collection in the No. 45.—Rnife-handle ofBone. Size 1:3; depthabout 8som. ii8 THE SECOND CITY : TROY. [Chap. III. There were also found two very pretty eggs of aragon-ite, of which I represent one under No, 46 ; they probablyserved as offerings or ex-votos, for we do not know forwhat else they could have been used: also many slingbullets of haematite or magnetic iron, of which I representone under No. 47 in the actual size. Some of these slingbullets were much larger, though always of the same shape :the largest found weighed 1130 grammes (nearly ih ); the second largest, which weighs 520grammes (nearly 11 ounces), was found in the temple B.
