Fern rhizome, polarised light micrograph. Longitudinal section through a rhizome of the bracken fern (Pteridium aquilinum). From left to right, the tissues are: sclerenchyma (red-brown), parenchyma (blue), the vascular cylinder (meristele, yellow), and the parenchyma (blue). The vascular cylinder has a central xylem strand (multi-coloured) and on either side of the xylem is the phloem, consisting of sieve tubes. Magnification: x230 when printed at 10 centimetres high.
