Healthy urinary tract. Coloured X-ray urogram of human kidneys, ureters and bladder in the abdomen. The two orange branched structures (upper left and right) are collecting ducts of the kidneys. Descending from these are long ureters (yellow); they carry urine from each kidney to the bladder. The oval-shaped structure (yellow) between the hip bones (at bottom) is a pool of urine that has collected in the bladder. Urograms are made by injecting a substance opaque to X-rays into the blood. An X-ray is then taken after the kidneys have had enough time to filter this substance from the blood. The test may be carried out to look for kidney stones or blockages in the ureters.
