Georges Charpak (1924-2010), French physicist and Nobel Laureate. Charpak was born in Poland, but in 1946 became a French citizen. He gained his doctorate at Paris in 1955, and in 1959 joined the CERN particle physics laboratory near Geneva. In the course of his research, Charpak became involved in the development of new types of particle detector. In 1968, he published his invention of the multiwire proportional counter and the drift chamber, and in the following years he stayed at the forefront of detector design. This led to Charpak receiving the 1992 Nobel Prize for Physics. Charpak is seen here at CERN in 1984 with a later model drift chamber.
