As the plantationsof the Arabs are all mortgaged to British-Indian financiers, these are the real slaveowners hiding themselves behind theArabs, who cultivate the plantations forthem, because British law will not allowthem to hold slaves. Even the slave-raid-ing expeditions to the interior were finan-ced by these British subjects. It was awell known Indian who started that arch-slaver Tippoo Tib in business. The rateof interest which the Indians get from themortgages ranges from20 to 30per. AFRICAN SLAVES ON A COCOA PLANTATION AT MT. MACACO. ST. THOME. called free-labor consists of slaves whoare hired by British subjects, and have topay their non-British proprietors half oftheir earnings. These free laborers mustfind enough work to satisfy their proprie-tors, or they are punished. The mortalityamong the slaves is appalling. It is esti-mated that thirty per cent, of the caravanporters who are taken to the interior diefrom exhaustion, ill-treatment and othercauses. One explorer went into the interiorwith 450 men. and he came back withonly 100. A slave is said to live onan average only eleven years. Prolific asnegroes generally are. the slaves have veryfew children. This is partly attributed tothe ill-treatment of very young girls Arabs and others.
