Split Ends ..... Hugh Thornton , Administrator with the Brighton West Pier Trust , surveys the shore section of the 125 year old West Pier which is to be demolished because of its dangerous condition. This is the latest serious setback for the trust's campaigners who want to restore the crumbling landmark . Merlin ,the international firm with a £30 million salvation scheme , look likely to pull out . The pier was badly damaged in the 1987 hurricane when a section linking it to the shore had to be demolished. 5 April 1991
