Portrait of a Himba woman. She is wearing traditional clothing and her partially clothed body is covered with ochre. Himba girls and women have different hairstyles as hairstyles indicate age and social status within the group. The Himba are a pastoral and nomadic people of northern Namibia who are closely related to the Herero people. The Himba speak OtjiHimba a variation of the Herero language. They tend herds of goats and cattle in the arid semi-desert environment, living in extended families in homesteads. Photographed in Opuwo, Kunene region, Northern Namibia.
