The Persians invaded Greece under King Xerxes in 480 At the Greek pass known as Thermopylae, King Leonidas and his 300 Spartans and a few allies, including the Thebans, took the stand against the Persians. The Greeks held off the Persians until a Greek traitor named Ephialtes told the Persians of a secret pass. The Persians overwhelmed the Greeks and killed all. In the 1902 illustration, the Greeks are seen defending the pass. In the background at far right, seated on his throne, is the Persian King Xerxes.
