BUCHANAN ClaU, 2/4 3 76 2JUL 19 1909 Hidden in the midst of a clump of treesand bushes nestles the Indian graveyard ofthe Port Madison Reservation, in one cornerof which is found the grave of Sealth, theIndian chieftain for whom the city of Seattleis named. Marked by a simple marble slab,he sleeps quietly, with the songs of the birdsoverhead and the murmur of the waves at hisfeet, within the shadow of the great citywhose founders owe so much to his friendship. Sealth, or Seattle as he was commonlycalled, was descended from a line of chief-tains from both parents, Chief Schwebeor the Suquamish tribe being his father, andScholitza, daughter of a Duwamish chief, being his mother. As to the place of birth of Sealth thereseems to be some controversy, it being claimedby some that he was born on one of the hunsouvenirofchiefs00buch
