Window openings in wall in Borgholm Castle - originally from the 12th century - on the island of Öland, Sweden. Shadows on grass
Borgholm Castle is situated just south of the city of Borgholm on the island of Öland, Sweden. The castle was built in the second half of the 12th century. Today it is a ruin, but in the early medieval times it was an important fortress of defence, from which you could monitor the navigation of the ships in the Sound of Kalmar and undesirable guests from the other side of the Baltic Sea. The history of the fortress is dramatic. Here Swedish kings lived and exercised their power. The fortress was rebuilt many times in later centuries. The last time the castle was attacked was in 1676-1677 in the Skaane War during which Danish warships fired at the castle from the Sound of Kalmar. In the following years the castle more or less fell into disrepair until it was destroyed by a fire October 14th 1806. Now only the thick limestone walls remain.
