An engraving of the English wrier Daniel Defoe, author of Robinson Crusoe, in the stocks. He was pilloried after being found guilty of libel in some anti-establishment pamphlets that he published. Legend has it that his views resonated so much with the public that they threw flowers at him and drank to his health.
