Radar screen display from a boat. Radar uses radio waves to determine the distance and direction to objects. An emitter sweeps a radio beam around the boat (which is at the centre of the display), and a detector picks up the reflections from objects such as other boats and rocks. These are displayed as the red and yellow patches.
