Contestants taking part in the Maitahi Outrigger Canoe Clubs annual regatta on Lake Rotoita in the Nelson Lakes. The club is based in Nelson. The regatta is held in Kerr Bay at the St Arnaud end of the lake. It is spread over two days, the second being the day for outrigger canoes( waka ama) with a crew of 6 paddlers. The course has lots of turns and is visible at all times from the shore. The event on Lake Rotoita is known as "Tuna E Hoe Ana" - Paddling with the Eels as the lake supports a large number of eels, some beneath the jetty - they can easilly be enticed out fot visitors to see. Fortunately these ones are protected.
