On December 2, 1918, 2nd Lieut. Carl C. Mayhew captured a photograph (number 28573) from a hill 1 kilometer north of the city. The image shows the German machine gunners vigorously resisting the American advances. The Americans finally took the hill after three unsuccessful attempts. The picture reveals the town of Grandpre, the valley, and the hills in the distance, partially obscured by the fog typical of this season in the Ardennes. The machine gun location and hill were protected by pits and brush camouflage and allowed the Germans to command the entire valley.
