In 1624, James I. took the government of the Virginiacolony out of the hands of the London Company, and began tocompose a new set of laws for Virginia, but before completingthe work, he died in March, 1625, and Charles I. became Kingof England, and officially recognized the Virginia Burgesses asa branch of the English government.
