London, UK, 6th October 2016. A campaigner for the Aylesbury Estate outside the RIBA Striling Prize awards wears a mask of Southwark Council leader Peter John as people arrived for the Stirling Prize award. The protest pointed out that one of the shortlisted projects, Trafalgar Place, was built on the demolished Heygate Estate, which they say was 'stolen from the people' and hundreds of social housing tenants and leaseholders evicted and the site sold at one tenth of its value to the developers. They held their own ceremony outside, and after a number of speeches awarded the Architects for Social Housing 'O J Simpson Award for getting away with murder' to drMM Architects for this project. Protesters from the Aylesbury estate, next door to Heygate, are fighting Southwark Council who they say are attempting a similar act of 'social cleansing', replacing social housing by properties for the wealthy and overseas investors.
