His school became famousthroughout the While hewas teaching he studied law,and in 1831 was admitted to thebar and .opened an office inHamilton. He was especiallystrong as a jury lawyer, hisappeals being very touching,and accompanied by tears whichhe could shed at any time. Hewas an ardent whig, and in1840 was prominent in helpingthe election of Gen. Harrison. Six years laterhe was elected governor. After the close of histerm he visited Wales and induced a large num-ber of his fathers countrymen to come to Americaand settle upon a tract of land which he had pur-chased in eastern Tennessee, whither he also re-moved himself and remained until the outbreak ofthe war.
