Sewall Green Wright (1889-1988), US geneticist. Wright was awarded his doctorate from Harvard University. He carried out pioneering work on population genetics, genetic drift, and calculations of gene frequency distributions. This work was used to refine and extend theories of evolution. Wright worked for most of his career (1925 to 1955) at the University of Chicago. He also worked at the US Department of Agriculture and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Wright was elected a Foreign Member of the Royal Society in 1963, awarded the National Medal of Science in 1966, and awarded the Darwin Medal in 1980.
