The 2011 West Indian American Day Parade was held on Monday, September 5, 2011 in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn, New York. The Labor Day parade is the culmination of a week long celebration of West Indian-Americans and their heritage. Parade participants in colorful festive attire dance along the parade route to the beat of Caribbean music. The elaborate costumes include feathered headdresses, body paint, and facial makeup which add to the unique flavor of the parade. Spectators not only enjoy the sights and sounds of the parade itself, but also can partake in West Indian food and purchase crafts and other items for sale along the parade route on Eastern Parkway. The event attracts 2-3 million spectators annually.
