A trail at Wetherill Mesa, Mesa Verde National Park in Colorado. The land on the Mesa top is still regenerating following wildfires in summer 2000. The first fire, on 20th July burned nearly 24000 acres of the park and adjacent lands. The park closed for 2 weeks. It opened on 4th August only to be closed the same day as another wild fire broke out. Whilst this level of fire was exceptional, archaeological evidence suggests they were not uncommon and the Ancestral Pueblo peolpe who lived there, would have known them. Soils and climatic conditions mean that regeneration is an extermely slow process.
