View over one of Europe’s smallest capital cities, Ljubljana in Slovenia, on a day in August when snow still lies on the peaks of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, visible in the distance. Striking modern architecture in the suburbs includes a triangular double block of apartments (centre right of this image), the “R5 residential building”, designed by the Ljubljana-based Andrej Černigoj architects.

Ljubljana, Slovenia: view in August from the top of Castle Hill, looking out over the north part of the old city centre and more modern suburbs. In the distance, the snow-capped peaks of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, most of which lie in Slovenia (the northern part is in Austria). In the right foreground is one of the bridges over the Ljubljanica River. In Ljubljana’s suburbs and away from historic buildings in the old town, there is some striking modern architecture. In the centre if this image, in the middle distance, are blocks of flats with off-centre pointed roofs and, to the right of these, an eye-catching triangular double block of apartments. The latter is the “R5 residential building” designed by the Ljubljana-based Andrej Černigoj architectural practice and finally completed in 2010. Ljubljana is the capital city and economic, political and cultural centre of Slovenia. With a population of 293,000, it is one of the smallest European capitals. It is located halfway between Vienna and Venice, at the intersection of major European transport routes, and is a blend of German, Mediterranean and Slovenian culture. A walled Roman encampment was built on the site of the present city in the 1st century BCE and developed into a settlement, destroyed by Attila in the mid-400s CE. It was rebuilt in the 1100s by Slovene Slavic tribes and gained city rights in 1220. In the late 1200s, rule passed to the Habsburgs and in 1335 it became the capital of the Habsburg-Austrian province of Carniola. Foreign rule ended in 1918 when Ljubljana and Slovenia became part of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes (later Yugoslavia). In 1991, when Slovenia gained independence, Ljubljana became the national capital.
