Three Mile Island power station layout. Diagram of the TMI-2 unit at the Three Mile Island nuclear power station and its basic components, including the reactor building, the turbine/auxiliary building and the cooling tower. Three Mile Island (TMI) nuclear power station is located near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, USA. An accident at TMI Unit 2 on 28 March 1979 led to a nuclear incident. It was caused by a loss of reactor cooling water that resulted in the exposure of fuel rods, some of which melted, burned through the reactor chamber lining and sank to the floor of the reactor building. The clean-up operation took 14 years.
