The annual Head of the River Race on the River Thames was cancelled half way through the event due to high winds and heavy waters. The first race was held in 1926 and goes from Mortlake to Putney in reverse direction to the Annual University Boat Race between Oxford and Cambridge. 420 crews of men's eights entered this year's race with some crews taking in so much water the boats went below the water line. Pictured are crews squaring up to start the race prior to cancellation. The race is a time trial, with crews starting at 10 second intervals.
