St Alexander Nevsky Orthodox Cathedral, Tallinn, Estonia
The magnificent St Alexander Nevsky Orthodox Cathedral in Tallinn, Estonia's capital, overlooks the city from Toompea Hill. It was designed by Mikhail Preobrazhensky and built in the end of the 19th century when the country was part of the Russian Empire. Not only its façade is striking but its vaulted interior is richly decorated with marbles and paintings. Although heavily bombed at the end of WWII most of the historical part of Tallinn survived and its unique preserved ensemble of medieval buildings and walls was declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1997.
