Lockheed U-2 spy aircraft. This aircraft was developed by the Lockheed Corporation, designed by Kelly Johnson, and made its maiden flight in August 1955. Since then, it has been used by the CIA and the US Air Force for high-altitude reconnaissance missions. It is able to gather intelligence while flying at altitudes of 21 kilometres. Over 80 U-2 aircraft have been built, and the U-2 design has been in use for over 50 years. It has a single pilot, and is metres long, with a wingspan of metres. It was used extensively during the Cold War, including during the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962. Photographed in the 1950s.
