This is a detail from a very high-resolution scan of an original copperplate antique engraving of Pope Paul III (1468-1549), by engraver and printmaker Friedrich von Hulsen (). It was first published in the 17th century. Pope Paul III was born Alessandro Farnese and reigned as Pope from October 1534 until his death in 1549. He headed an influential Italian family and came to the papal throne following the 1527 Sack of Rome and with the Catholic Church in some disarray. He led the Counter-Reformation, establishing new religious orders such as the Jesuits and the Barnabites and convening the Council of Trent in 1545. He supported the Renaissance movement and was a significant patron of the arts. Michelangelo's depiction of the Last Judgement was completed in the Sistine Chapel of the Vatican during his reign. He also appointed the ailing Michelangelo to supervise the rebuilding of St. Peter's Basilica. Friedrich von Hulsen, also known as Frederik van Hulsen and Fredericus Hulsius / Hulseen, was the son of Ghent mathematician and book-publisher Levis van Hulsen and was born in the Dutch city of Middelburg. His family moved to Nuremberg, Germany, in 1592 and in 1602 to Frankfurt, where Friedrich managed the family publishing house and was a pupil of the engraver Jan Theodor de Bry. In 1627, von Hulsen was briefly in London, where most of his work seems to have been connected with propaganda for the Protestant cause.
